RSVP of the Pioneer Valley’s Healthy Bones & Balance class begins in Chicopee
HCG is excited to announce the addition of Hampden County’s first Healthy Bones & Balance class beginning March 14th at the RiverMills Chicopee Senior Center. Chicopee joins 27 other sites in the Pioneer Valley in offering this acclaimed program.
RSVP, the volunteer connector for people 55 and over in the Pioneer Valley, partners with community organizations to provide free weekly exercise classes for seniors. The Healthy Bones & Balance classes are led by trained RSVP volunteers and designed to increase participants’ strength, mobility, flexibility, and balance.
“The new Healthy Bones & Balance class at RiverMills is the perfect addition to our exercise offerings,” says Holly Angelo, assistant director, Chicopee Council on Aging. “It’s been proven time and again the importance of keeping your body moving and in working condition, in order to improve balance and prevent falls. We want our older adults to stay active and independent for as long as they can, and this class will help them reach that goal.”
RSVP volunteers are part of a network of 600+ community-minded people 55 and over. RSVP staff use a one-on-one approach to connect individual volunteers with service opportunities, which allow them to meet their needs while maximizing their skill sets. Volunteers are matched with the community programs that will benefit the most from their expertise. This hands-on method gives volunteers the opportunity to make a profound impact on the organizations they serve, and allows them to help their communities grow and prosper.
“We are thrilled to have trained volunteers to lead the first Healthy Bones & Balance class in Chicopee,” says Lindsay Bennett-Jacobs, director, RSVP of the Pioneer Valley. “We are looking forward to expanding our program in Hampden County by connecting volunteers with meaningful opportunities to serve.”
In 2017, HCG was awarded a competitive $110,000 Senior Corps expansion grant to provide service to Hampden County. Formerly RSVP of Hampshire & Franklin Counties, the program began in Hampshire County in 1973, and later expanded into Franklin County in 1999. RSVP has been a core service of HCG since 2009.
